Godai Tomoatsu
Godai Tomoatsu (1836–1885) was a samurai-turned-businessman from Satsuma domain. In the late Edo period he traveled to Europe as a domain student, studying Western industry and economic systems. After the Meiji Restoration he relocated to Osaka, where in 1878 he founded the Osaka Chamber of Commerce (today's Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and served as its first chairman, while also helping to establish the Osaka Stock Exchange. Remembered as the driving force who led Osaka — once "the nation's kitchen" — into a modern commercial and industrial city, he is known as the "father of Osaka's economy."
