Hojo Tokimune
Hojo Tokimune (1251–1284) was the eighth regent (shikken) of the Kamakura shogunate. Appointed regent at just 18, he repeatedly refused demands for submission delivered by envoys from the Mongol Empire. When Mongol forces invaded in 1274 (the Battle of Bun'ei) and again in 1281 (the Battle of Koan), Tokimune led the shogunate's response, directing the defense of Kyushu and ordering the construction of the stone defensive wall along Hakata Bay known today as the Genko Boirui. Having turned back two Mongol invasions, he died in 1284 at the age of 33.
