Ota Dokan
Ota Dokan (1432–1486) was a warrior and poet who served the Ogigayatsu branch of the Uesugi clan. He is known for building Edo Castle in 1457. When constructing the castle, he is said to have invited the deity Sanno Gongen to be enshrined within its grounds — an act considered the origin of today's Hie Shrine. Beyond his military career, Dokan was also celebrated as an accomplished poet, and many anecdotes about him survive. In 1486, suspected of disloyalty by his own lord, Uesugi Sadamasa, he was assassinated in Kasuya, Sagami Province (present-day Isehara, Kanagawa).
