Shimazu Nariakira

Shimazu Nariakira (1809-1858) was the 11th lord of the Satsuma domain in the final decades of the Edo period. After a succession dispute known as the Oyura Disturbance delayed his rise to power, he became domain lord at age 42 and aggressively pursued the adoption of Western technology to strengthen the domain's industry and military. He is also known for promoting talented men regardless of social rank, including Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi. Though he held the position for only seven years, his policies are widely credited as one of the driving forces behind the Meiji Restoration.
