Tokugawa Yoshinobu
Tokugawa Yoshinobu (1837–1913) was the 15th and last shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. As tensions rose at home and abroad, he announced the Taisei Hōkan — the return of political power to the Emperor — at Nijo Castle in Kyoto in 1867. Yet the struggle for control of the new government did not settle, and in January 1868 former shogunate forces clashed with the new imperial army at the Battle of Toba–Fushimi. When the shogunate side suffered early defeats, Yoshinobu slipped away from Osaka Castle and sailed back to Edo, retreating from the political stage. With this battle, Tokugawa rule over the Kyoto–Osaka region effectively came to an end.
