Hojo Soun
Hojo Soun (c. 1432-1519) was an early Sengoku-period warlord and the founder of the "Later Hojo" clan. His origins were long debated, but recent scholarship identifies him as a member of the Ise clan, born Ise Moritoki and known after taking Buddhist vows as Soun-an Sozui. After intervening in a succession dispute within the Imagawa clan and being granted Kokokuji Castle in Suruga province, he brought Izu province under his control and, in the 1490s, advanced into Odawara in Sagami province, taking Odawara Castle from the Omori clan. Odawara Castle then became the base from which the Later Hojo clan ruled the Kanto region for five generations.
