Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598) was a warlord from Owari province. Rising through the ranks under Oda Nobunaga, he secured his position as Nobunaga's successor by defeating Akechi Mitsuhide after the Honno-ji Incident. In 1583 he built Osaka Castle as his base and pressed forward with the unification of Japan, subduing the Hojo clan at Odawara in 1590 to complete the process. He also promoted commerce vigorously and is remembered as the figure who laid Osaka's foundations as a city.
